Representing Adult and Child Victims of Sexual Crimes in Organized Sports – Sexual Assault, Abuse, and Exploitation
On December 7, 2017, a federal judge sentenced Larry Nasser to 60 years in prison for federal child pornography charges. On January 4, 2018, a federal judge sentenced him to an additional 40 to 1765 years in prison, set to run after his first 60, for three sexual assault charges. And that ended one of the largest sexual abuse scandals in sports history.
Larry Nassar became the face of the seedy underbelly of competitive, organized sports—one that was allowed to remain in the shadows for far too long. Nassar was the national team doctor for the USA Gymnastics Organization. For decades, Nassar abused his position and sexually assaulted hundreds of young female athletes under the pretense of providing medical treatment.
Nassar’s case revealed that abuses in the gymnastics circuit were widespread because the system benefited predatory coaches and staff, like Nassar. Abusive coaches could move from gym to gym, taking advantage of a lax system of oversight, even among USA Gymnastics-certified gyms.
This kind of system allows predators to hide in plain sight, attacking victim after victim, child after child, woman after woman, man after man, with little concern for getting caught.
It Stops Now
It is often particularly daunting for these survivors to come forward due to the overwhelming cover-up culture within these organizations. The organization structure of these organizations has allowed these abuse, assault, and rape allegations to be concealed, protecting the organization, protecting the assaulter/abuser/rapist, and completely dismissing the survivor.
This behavior often retraumatizes and revictimizes the survivor over again, intensifying their psychological and mental injuries. Carter Law Group attorneys are trained to avoid retraumatization triggers and do everything in their power to make our clients feel as comfortable with us as possible.
Signs of Child Molestation
Children being sexually abused by coaches often don’t come forward easily. Below are some red flags that may signal that your child is being sexually abused by a religious leader or member of your church:
- Unwillingness to attend games, practices, or other events or activities associated with the sport
- Withdrawn behaviors around the leader
- Physical injuries or illnesses
- Depression
- Trouble eating and/or sleeping
