Breast Implants Overview

Persons who elect to receive breast implants do so under the belief that the implants they’re putting into their body are tested and safe. Scientific evidence suggests that belief is wrong. Scientific evidence supports claims that textured breast implants can cause anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This disease is also often referred to as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

In July 2019, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), requested the breast implant manufacturer Allergan issue a worldwide voluntary recall of its Biocell® breast implants and tissue expanders “(d)ue to uncommon incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).”

The FDA began investigating Allergan’s textured implants and tissue expanders when a new worldwide report alerted it to a total of 573 unique BIA-ALCL cases, 481 of which had Allergan breast implants at the time of diagnosis. Further, according to the report, out of 13 deaths attributable to BIA-ALCL, 12 of the individuals were implanted with an Allergan breast implants at the time of their BIA-ALCL diagnosis.

Based on this and other available information, the FDA concluded that the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan Biocell® is approximately 6 times higher than the risk associated with textured implants from other manufacturers. The FDA therefore concluded that continued distribution of Allergan’s Biocell® textured breast implants would likely cause serious and life-threatening injuries.
